When I was younger, it was always a foregone conclusion that (1) I had a special purpose, and (2) I’d be accomplishing that purpose in this lifetime. It’s just one of those things I knew, as much as I know my own name.
As I got older, though, I let cynicism get in the way. Firstly, because nothing was really happening on that front. I tried several ways to accomplish what I believed that purpose to be, but none ever panned out.
And secondly, because I just let other people get to me. Whether from my own family, or simply articles that I read, the message was, “Everyone has a dream. Very few fulfill their dreams.”
It took me some years to get over that cynicism. And heck, now I’m quitting a job to go and follow my dreams, so I seem to have come a long way. 😄
I do think we all have a passion, whether consciously, or one we haven’t allowed ourselves to discover yet.
And unfortunately we live in a society where people are all too happy to knock you down a peg if they get the chance. Your friends and family may not believe in your dream. They may only believe in the traditional path of working a 9-5 job you hate until you can retire, and only then can you really start living.
But of course, if you have to wait to start living until you’re 65, wasn’t it all really a waste?
I encourage you to discover your passion, if you haven’t already. As cliche as it is, ask yourself what you’d be doing if you had unlimited money? What would you do for free if you had to? Then, find a way to get paid for it.
This is a big world, with 7 billion people and growing. There’s more than enough room for you to be successful at your passion.
And in my belief, your passion is really the only thing you can be truly successful at.
We come into this world with a particular purpose. If we live that purpose, we’ll be happy, fulfilled, and successful.
I want to share a quote I found immensely encouraging, from the book Success Is Not an Accident by Dr. John Kappas:
All things considered, it is my firm belief that luck is not an accident. Luck is an opportunity which can be established and projected through our attitudes. It can be guided and stimulated by programming the subconscious mind to encourage the end of negative cycles and the beginning of positive ones. And these positive cycles can last your entire lifetime, no matter how long you live. There is no reason to have to go downhill again. You, the individual, can create the favorable conditions which we recognize and accept as being “lucky.”
