In this episode, Brandon, Christine, and Justin discuss the planets in astrology, and how these planetary energies can affect our lives, and influence the creation process. Only when you keep all of these energies balanced can you hope to maximize your effectiveness as a creator.

Brandon: Welcome to The Unseen World. This is episode 3, “The Planetary Archetypes and Their Role in the Creation Process: Part I: The Personal Planets.” I am Brandon Olivares.
Christine: And I’m Christine Olivares.
Justin: I’m Justin Williams.
Brandon: Today we’re starting a series of podcasts, actually. It will be two parts. I’ve been really excited about this topic since I got the idea of it. It’s going to be a two-part series of podcasts about astrology and how the planetary energies influence the creation process and influence even our everyday lives. I’m focusing especially on the creation process, on magic, on witchcraft, on the law of attraction, however you want to see it. It’s sort of a merger of our two podcasts: The Unseen World, which is this one, and Co-Create Your Life. It’s sort of a merger of the two, but because this is more about magic and astrology, I’m putting it under The Unseen World. That’s what we’re going to be discussing.
First, before we get into all that, I want to make some announcements. If you would like to see the show notes for this podcast and to leave comments as well and read the transcript, you can go to cocreationcoaching.org/unseen003. If you would like to ask a question for a future The Unseen World podcast episode, you can go to cocreationcoaching.org/ask/unseen.
So, again, we’re talking about astrology today. It’s something that I’ve been discussing recently on the website. Just this past Monday I talked about the Saturn return. I’ll be talking about some other topics.
Christine: I think it was Tuesday. Was it Tuesday?
Brandon: I don’t know. It was earlier this week. [laughs] No, it was Monday. I know it was Monday because…
Christine: Yes, that’s right.
Free Will and Astrology
Brandon: We talked about the Saturn return. I recommend going to see that post if you’re interested in astrology. I’ve been talking more about astrology. It’s really important, I think, because the energies of the planets really do influence our everyday lives. I know a lot of people have trouble with that because it brings up issues about free will and stuff like that. I’ve described that in the Saturn return post. I’m not really going to cover that too much here. Essentially, my view of it is that these energies influence us. They don’t block our free will. They don’t mean, necessarily, that we don’t have free will. We absolutely do. It’s just that we’re influenced by these different energies. That’s everyday life. We’re all influenced by different energies, by different forces. When someone is hungry, they’re influenced to go eat. [laughs]
Justin: They don’t have to.
Brandon: They don’t have to, no. [laughs] For me, when I get really hungry, I get really, really grumpy.
Brandon: Oh, be quiet. [laughs]
Christine: And weak, too.
Brandon: And very weak, physically. I get very light-headed. That’s not negating my free will. It’s influencing my free will. I’m going to go choose to go eat because that’s what’s going to make me feel better. With astrology, you have these different planetary aspects and different planetary energies which do influence us absolutely, but it doesn’t mean we don’t have free will. It just means that they’re going to influence us to go this way or that way. With the Saturn return I talked about Monday (and there are lots of other forces, too, at play), they’re going to influence us in certain directions.
What this series of podcasts is about is that those energies have to be balanced. If any one of those energies is out of balance, you have an issue. It becomes pretty obvious. You can look at your own life, and I’ll show you how to do this, and see where you might be a little bit off with some of those energies. I’ll explain this later, but in spiritual circles we can discourage the expression of some of these energies. It’s not so good to do that. I’ll explain that later. You want to make sure they’re in balance.
Personal and Collective Planets
Brandon: There are a total of (in astrology) ten astrological planets, especially if you’re looking at the modern planets, which I’ll go through that list soon. There’s a total of ten planets. We’re dividing into two groups. The first group is the personal planets, which is the Sun and the Moon. They’re considered planets in astrology even though they’re not, astronomically speaking, planets. Astrologically speaking, they are. The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars are the personal planets. Those affect your personality. They tell you who you are as a person.
Christine: That’s so cool.
Justin: They are. They do. They really affect you.
Brandon: Then you have what we’ll talk about next time—the collective planets, which are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Those are called collective because they have such a slower rate of revolution around the sun that they’ll stay in one sign for quite a while—anywhere from Jupiter staying in one sign for a year all the way to Pluto staying in one sign for upwards of 32 years, sometimes.
Brandon: Depending on how fast it’s going, anywhere from 12 to 32 years. They define generations, not just people. That’s why they’re called “collective.”
Christine: Wow, that’s cool.
Brandon: Right. They also have a huge influence on other aspects of life that can really play a big part in how we’re living and what kind of energies we’re expressing in our own lives.
Christine: Not just personally, but worldly, too, would you say?
Justin: They affect everything. Imagine the ocean tide and massive waves. They just do.
Brandon: Exactly right. All these energies interact together. They all balance each other out. I’m going to pair a lot of these planets together. They don’t all have pairs, but I’m going to pair a lot of them together and show how they counterbalance one another. With any planet, any excess or deficiency will mean trouble, really.
Christine: Is there a way to collectively check? You know how you can do astrological charts. Is there a way to know what’s going to come up in the world, too?
Brandon: Definitely. You can do charts for countries. People have done a chart for the United States. The natal chart for the U.S. would be July 4, 1776 at the exact time that the Declaration of Independence was signed.
Justin: Yes, we are Aquarius, and our Moon is Cancer, I think. Our ascendant is Gemini.
Brandon: What do you mean by—what is Aquarius?
Justin: The U.S.
Brandon: No, not the Sun sign, because the Sun would have been in Cancer.
Justin: Was it? Maybe I got that backwards. I read it somewhere. Maybe I got it backwards.
Brandon: Yes, possibly.
Justin: I could have gotten that backwards.
Brandon: July 4th would have been a Sun sign in Cancer. The Moon could have been in Aquarius, or the ascendant. I don’t really…
Justin: That might have been it. [laughs]
Brandon: To answer Christine’s question, you can have a chart for really any world event, any world power, any country, anything, any region, pretty much anything. It will tell you what you can expect in the future and things like that. It’s definitely true.
That brings up another good point as well. Before we get started on the planets, a lot of people think astrology is just about your Sun sign.
Justin: It’s not.
Brandon: It’s so much more than that. I want to just tell you, first of all. I can’t go into detail with astrology here because we only have so much time. I don’t think you want to listen for five hours about astrology.
Christine: Some people might.
Brandon: Some people might.
Justin: I would. I’ve read enough books.
Brandon: I’ll sit here and talk about it for five hours. [laughs] I don’t know how many people want to listen to that.
You have, yes, your Sun sign. The Sun is a very important part of your chart. I will talk about the Sun first in a moment. You have the ascendant, which is basically which sign was on the horizon rising in the east at your birth. You have all the houses—twelve houses. You have ten different planets, including the Sun, in different houses in different signs making various aspects to one another. It’s a very complex system.
Is the Sun Sign Enough?
Brandon: Not only do you have your Sun sign, but you have your Moon sign, your Mercury sign, your Venus sign, for all ten planets (or seven, if you are more traditional with astrology). You have all the aspects that they make with one another. You have progressions. You have solar returns and transits and all sorts of different things you can do with the chart.
Just to have a Sun sign—that describes one twelfth of the world’s population. Great. That’s not going to tell you too much. People will say, “Aries are like this.” Okay, maybe.
Justin: Yes, at they’re base, maybe, but that’s it.
Christine: I used to have a shirt that told all the characteristics of Aries. I used to wear it proudly, but it was like, “Some of these are not true.”
Christine: That’s why.
Justin: It depends on your other aspects and how you decide your environment, how you grew up, how you accentuate each characteristic. Some characteristics might not even appear even if they’re there. They could just be dormant. They could just not be true. They could appear completely differently. But you’ll have a base. You’ll go, “Oh, that’s Aries.” You’ll see some of it, but it will look completely different from one piece to the other.
Christine: That’s why I hate horoscopes.
Brandon: That’s just one thing I want to bring up. Some people dismiss astrology, saying, “It’s just Sun signs. How can that really describe anyone? It’s too general.” Yes, it is too general. You’re right. It’s not meant to describe everyone because everyone has a completely different chart. Even if two people were born at the exact same second but in two different locations in the world, they will have two different charts. A different ascendant will be on the horizon. Different houses will be there. All sorts of differences. It will look completely different. It’s a very, very complex system that very well describes the life of an individual.
Getting to our actual point, we’re going to cover the first five planets today: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. These are the personal planets, as I said. With the personal planets, again, these describe your personality. These describe who you are as a person. They are so fast-moving that they really are different for each person. All of these planets make a full revolution around the Sun (except for the Sun of course) (and except the Moon, which goes around the Earth) within two years. The Moon is 29 days. The Sun is obviously a year. Mercury is way less than a year. I don’t remember the exact number of days.
Justin: 88 days (source).
Brandon: 88, wow. Venus is 225 days. Mars is a little less than two years (note: 687 days [source]). They move very quickly. They’re only in a sign for a very short amount of time, so they are moving very quickly and making new aspects with different planets and things like that. That’s what these personal planets are. They describe your personality.
Again, they have different energies. These energies will have different expressions through you, but if you go out of balance with these energies, then you need to bring those back into balance. These being the personal planets, they are very important in the magical creation process. They really influence first-hand how you’re going to create and use magic.
Justin: I just started studying them for magic, so yay.
Brandon: Maybe you’ll learn some stuff.
Brandon: The Sun is, again, what everyone knows about—your sun sign. I’m a Virgo. Christine’s an Aries. Justin, what are you?
Justin: Taurus. [claps once]
Brandon: I can see that, totally. That’s your Sun sign. That’s great.
The Sun basically describes your personality in summary. The Sun (I’ve heard it said) is the hero’s journey. It’s who you are, what your story is, what’s going on in your life. It’s your ego.
When I say “ego,” I don’t mean it in the bad way which a lot of people mean when they say “ego.” It can be. It can be, but not necessarily.
Christine: You mean personality.
Brandon: I mean personality.
Christine: It’s the psychological in me. Sorry.
Brandon: That’s okay. [laughs]
The Sun is, again, your ego. It describes who you are. It’s also the source of life. It’s the source of who you are as a person. Without the Sun, without that solar energy in your chart in your life, you have no purpose. That’s your purpose. Why would you want to do anything in life if you have no solar energy? That’s going to give you your direction. That’s going to give you your purpose in life, why you are here. If you totally kill that off like a lot of people try to do, you just don’t have any reason to be here. The Sun is extremely important for all that. It’s the center of everything.
In astrology, you can tell a lot about a person just by where the Sun is, which sign it’s in, which aspects are made to it, which house it’s in, and things like that.
Christine: This makes me want a reading.
Brandon: [laughs] I will, sometime.
Justin: I’ve got my full chart.
Brandon: Have you?
Brandon: That’s awesome.
That is the Sun, basically.
With any of these, you can have an excess or a deficiency. An excess in solar energy is basically: you’re going to be an egomaniac. [laughs] To put it in the most terse way possible, you’re going to be an egomaniac. You’re going to be all about yourself. The Sun believes in itself. Just imagine some of the Sun gods. Apollo is a really good example.
Christine: Arrogant, but he learns.
Brandon: He’s a great example of what can happen when you have too much Sun. You’re very sure of yourself, which is a great thing, but yes, very arrogant. Very egoic.
Christine: A little stupid.
Brandon: Yes, because of being arrogant.
Christine: That’s what I mean.
Brandon: These are the more negative qualities that the Sun can have, which is often meant by “ego” when people talk about it. You don’t want that to happen. You don’t want the ego to be too strong, but you also don’t want it to be too weak.
The deficiencies of the Sun are if you have too little ego, no purpose, no drive, no direction.
Christine: So that would be like depression.
Brandon: Yes, depression is a very common experience when you have too little solar energy. It’s just not very good. You don’t have any purpose for doing what you do.
Christine: You need a balance.
Brandon: Why would you? You need a balance. That’s what all of these are. That’s extremely important.
If you want to have more solar energy in your life, you want to focus on: be more sure of yourself. With all of these, you can do magical rituals. I’m not going to focus on them too much. They’re out there. You can find them. There are definitely magical rituals you can do to increase solar energy or increase any of these energies or decrease them if you have to.
If you have to increase solar energy, you want to be more confident in yourself. I’ve gained a lot in that in the last few years in solar energy for myself. You want to be a lot more confident in yourself. Be more sure of yourself. Really find your purpose. Really know what you want to do in life. Find your direction. It’s hard because a lot of people promote humility and passivity and that kind of stuff. This is one of the things where spiritual communities go against some of this stuff because they’ll encourage that kind of thing. But you really need that solar energy to have a strong ability to create and to be happy in life. Otherwise, you feel aimless.
So increase your confidence, increase your sureness in yourself and self-assurance, and that will do a lot to increase solar energy.
Christine: What about to decrease it?
Brandon: To decrease it (good question), first of all, if you can realize you need to decrease it, you’re already on your way.
Justin: I was going to say you don’t need to.
Brandon: You can, if you have an excess in solar energy. You’re going to be arrogant and a lot of that stuff.
Justin: No, I mean if you realize you need to decrease it…
Brandon: Right. You might not need to.
Justin: You’re already doing it. What you want to know is how to decrease someone else’s. [laughs] That’s what you want.
Brandon: If you have the self-awareness to say…
Justin: Decrease that Aries a little bit. Knock out his Scorpio a little bit. Attacking you with the chart, that’s harsh.
Brandon: If you can realize you need to decrease it, then you’re already pretty good.
Christine: That’s hard to do.
Brandon: It is hard to do. You want to realize that you’re not perfect. You want to put a little more trust in the Universe and the gods and not so much in yourself. You want to be able to let go. A lot of people with excess solar energy…it’s very hard for them to let go. They cling on to things too much because they want to control everything. The sun is all about control. The ego is all about control. You want to let go a bit more. Learn how to let go. Learn how to trust a bit more. You don’t want to swing all the way over to totally trusting and no self-initiative. You don’t want that either. That’s a balance.
Brandon: The Moon is the other luminary we have, so it’s also very important. The Moon sign is probably another one of the most important aspects of the chart.
Christine: I don’t know what mine is.
Brandon: Mine is Capricorn, in my sixth house, I believe. No, my fifth house (note: neither, it’s my fourth house; oops).
Justin: Mine is Leo.
Brandon: Leo? Oh, that’s good.
Christine: I feel left out.
Justin: I don’t know what house it’s in. Mine is Leo.
Brandon: Do you know your ascendant?
Justin: Ascendant is Sagittarius.
Brandon: It’s probably your ninth house, depending on the degree and how your houses fall.
Justin: I’ve got to review houses. I’m not….They go kind of with the signs, but I’ve got to look back at them. I have 71.2% fire in my chart.
Brandon: I can see that.
Christine: Yes, for sure.
Justin: I’m an earth sign. Somebody asks me, “What’s your element?” I don’t even know. My sun sign is earth, but 19.9% earth in my chart. I’m not sure that’s my real element, but….[laughs] It’s the Sun sign.
Christine: Do you know what mine is, or no?
Brandon: I do not know what yours is off the top of my head. I’m sorry. (Note: Christine’s Moon is in Leo, in her eleventh house.)
Christine: It will just be me left out.
Brandon: [laughs] Sorry.
Christine: He’ll tell me later.
Brandon: I’ll tell you later.
The Moon is all about your emotions.
Christine: I don’t want to know, then. [laughs]
Brandon: The Moon is one of those planets that we can pair up. We’re going to pair up the Moon and Mercury. We’ll describe why later.
The Moon is your emotions. Your emotions—people like to make this not so balanced. People like to focus on the positive emotions. Here’s what happens. What does the Moon do? It waxes and wanes. You have the full moon and you have the new moon. With emotions…
Christine: Positive and negative.
Brandon: Really awesome positive emotions. Not-so-awesome negative emotions. That’s part of life. Your emotions will wax and wane. That’s just part of what happens. You have to realize this. You have to get comfortable with this and make it be okay. You don’t want to kick out those negative emotions. I’ve talked about this a lot before. You don’t want to kick out those negative emotions. They are part of the creation process. They play a part in everyday life. They are important. They tell you what’s going on in your life. You will have positive and negative no matter what. The Moon, again, waxes and wanes. That’s just what it does. Your emotions wax and wane. That’s just what they do. They’re going to be positive and negative. You want to be aware of that. You don’t want to be imbalanced and just have the positive and try to always be happy. You don’t want to do that.
I had a blog post quite a while ago about the danger of positive thinking when that’s all you try to do, so that’s something you don’t want to do.
The Moon has roughly four quarters. In paganism we divide it into three cycles. You have the waxing which is like the maiden in maiden, mother, and crone. The maiden is new life and new beginnings, and you can work on longer-term manifestations that take a while to grow. The mother is the full moon, which is more immediate manifestations with a lot of energy you can get pretty quickly. It has a lot of emotions. The crone is the dying away of the Moon, the waning, the dark moon, the new moon. That is about endings. That is about death and transformation and taking things out of your life. All those are necessary. It’s a cycle.
You want to respect your emotions on both ends of the spectrum. You want to be true to your emotions. You don’t want to lie to yourself about what your emotions are. You want to be true to who you are emotionally. That is extremely important.
Another aspect of this is you want to be careful of something called the “void of course moon.” When you’re working on magic or manifestation or creation or whatever you want to call it, if it requires a lot of lunar energy, you want to make sure the Moon is not void of course. A void of course moon is a Moon that has finished all of its aspects in a particular sign and has not crossed over to the next sign yet. Let’s say the Moon is in Aquarius, for example, and it’s completed all of its aspects with other planets (all of its squares and trines and sextiles and conjunctions and oppositions and whatnot). It’s not crossed over into Pisces yet. That’s a void of course moon.
Emotionally in life, you’ll notice you have times when you just feel “blah.”
Christine: [laughs] Yes.
Brandon: You’ll have times where you are aimless. That’s the void of course. You want to respect those cycles. You can’t change that. You don’t want to change it.
Christine: But it feels like you’re depressed, too, almost.
Brandon: It can, yes, but it will pass. It’s a natural part of the emotional cycle. Don’t try to do major projects (especially don’t try to begin major projects) when you have a void of course moon. You really don’t want to do that. You can look up online what the void of course moon is.
Justin: Yes, you want to do things that are just what you’ve been doing and ongoing stuff. Stuff that’s just natural and normal for you to do. Nothing new, if you’re going to use it, especially if you’re going to use lunar energy. It’s a good time for meditation and just enjoying yourself.
Brandon: Right, exactly.
An excess in lunar energy is focusing too much on your emotions, being too emotional, being caught up too much in your emotions. You don’t want that either. Emotions are a tool. They are not who you are. You don’t want to identify with them. We’ll talk about that next. You don’t want that to happen because that can really mess things up, especially with magic. You don’t want to get caught up in your emotions too much.
Christine: You just want to know they’re there, right?
Brandon: Right. You want to know they’re there. You want to use them as a tool.
An excess could also be making an imbalance in your emotions. You don’t want to do that. Trying to focus too much on the positive, trying to get rid of the negative, and things like that.
A deficiency in the lunar energy could be denying your emotions. This is the other side, denying your negative emotions especially, denying how you feel about something, not really allowing your emotions to express themselves. That’s not good, either, because it’s going to block up your energy. You’re not going to be able to create so well, because creation depends on the free flow of energy. You need that emotional energy to flow freely without getting stuck or being denied. You don’t want to get too caught up in the head intellectually. You want to allow those emotions to flow.
Brandon: Next up we have Mercury. Mercury is a wonderful planet. It’s paired up with the Moon. The Moon is emotions. Mercury is the mind, the intellect. Emotions and intellect are paired off because they are sort of two sides of the same coin. You need to have a balance between the two. You can’t get caught up in the mind in your head, and you can’t get too caught up in your emotions, either. They play important roles, and you have to keep them balanced.
What I do want to point out is: Mercury is in the Tarot the Magus, the Magician. The reason for that is the Magician is the detached consciousness that is able to look at what he or she wants and go after it without getting caught up in emotions. The Magician is able to separate himself from his emotions and be detached and really go after it. A lot of people say that emotions are really the most important part of creation. They really aren’t. It’s the will. This is not the will, but this is what is behind the will. We’ll talk about the will later. This is the intellect. This is the part of yourself that can be detached and say, “This is what I want to do. I’m going to go after it. I can see clearly what’s going on. I have all these tools at my disposal.” You are the magician here. Mercury is the magician. You need that intellectual power and you can go after anything you want. Too much emotion here, again, like I said with the Moon, too much emotion can block up that detached intellectual aspect that you need with creation.
Justin: I’ll say my Mercury is in Aries. For me, I notice the sign that Mercury is in is how your mind works. If your Mercury is in certain signs, you’ll have jet-like thinking. So mine is quick. If your Mercury is in certain places like Taurus or Virgo, your mind’s wheels will turn slower. That doesn’t mean it’s any slower. Your mind is more focused and deliberate. I should say deliberate.
Brandon: Mercury is most comfortable because it rules Gemini and Virgo. Those are the two signs it rules. That’s where it’s going to be the most comfortable. It just depends on the sign and the house, obviously. Mercury is all about intellect.
Justin: I find it very interesting. I read that.
Brandon: Yeah, it’s very interesting. The emotions are a tool for the magician. You don’t identify with them. You are a detached intellect that can use everything as a tool. That’s very important.
An excess in Mercury—you don’t want that, either, because with an excess you have too much in your head. You’re not enough in the emotions. You overthink things. You overanalyze things. I’ve done that tons of times.
Justin: Then it starts looking the same way. Then everything starts looking like the right answer. [laughs] You lose yourself.
Brandon: I am very, very strong in Mercury. I have to really avoid that tendency to become too involved in my head. I can do that.
Christine: You’re very analytical.
Brandon: I’m very analytical. That’s something you want to avoid. That’s an excess.
A deficiency in Mercury, you’re not thinking enough. You’re too caught up in everything else. You’re not able to back off and just witness what’s going on. This is the witness consciousness. You can just see what’s going on and know how to handle it if you have it balanced. If you have a deficiency in it, you can’t do that. You’re too caught up. This can really counteract the ego and the Sun really well, if the Sun is too strong. You need to back off and use a little more intellect and thinking and witnessing. That will help with that, too.
One thing I find interesting is in the mythology. Hermes/Mercury was the one who basically could go into any of the worlds. He helped the souls of the dead go to the underworld.
Christine: I didn’t know that.
Justin: He could, and he could do it really fast and get out.
Brandon: Right. Because to me, intellect—you can go anywhere and not get stuck there. You can go anywhere and not get caught up in identification with that state and whatever comes with that. You’re very detached from it, which is good. When you’re in that zero state, when you’re the witness, you can pretty much go anywhere intellectually speaking and not get caught up, not identify, and things like that. It’s very powerful for magic. That is how Mercury works.
Brandon: Next up is Venus.
Justin: Oh, yeah.
Brandon: [laughs] You sound a little too excited there, Justin.
Justin: The love. Just to let you know, my Venus is also in Aries.
Brandon: Really? Things are coming to mind that I’m not going to go to. Justin with relationships, Venus in Aries.
Christine: You’ve lost me.
Justin: No, no, I know what he’s talking about. I’m going to save it all for one relationship.
Brandon: I didn’t mean that. I mean like how you are in a relationship—very fiery.
Christine: Oh, God.
Brandon: Very up-front. Very forward.
Justin: Yes. That’s going to be very up-front, very forward.
Brandon: Yeah, yeah. [laughs] I’m not even going there.
Christine: You’re fiery. I’m fiery, too.
Brandon: I’m not sure where my Venus is, actually.
Christine: The only one you did for me is Venus.
Brandon: Justin. My Venus—I just looked it up—is in Leo. It’s in my eleventh house. I remember now. It’s my eleventh house, in Leo. That’s also more on the fiery side. Leo is more about…dramatic, not in a bad way, but it’s also about drama, the arts.
Christine: You’re a piano player.
Justin: That’s a fixed sign.
Brandon: It is a fixed sign, yes. Venus is in Leo in my eleventh house. My Mercury is in Libra in my first house in…
Christine: I feel very left out.
Brandon: Who I am is intellectual. I’m sorry.
Christine: You’ll tell me later. I’m just joking. (Note: Christine’s Venus is in Aquarius in her fifth house.)
Brandon: We’re going to pair off Venus and Mars.
Christine: Oh, God.
Brandon: In mythology (this is the cool thing about mythology: often it reflects reality) Aphrodite (who was Venus) was with Aries (who was Mars). They were lovers. Not that Venus wasn’t with other people, too, but her primary guy was Mars. It shows a very, very important dichotomy which I’ll talk about. That dichotomy is actually what I talked about in my previous post: attraction versus creation. This is the Venus-Mars dichotomy. A lot of the law of attraction people really, really overemphasize the Venus.
Christine: Feel good.
Brandon: The Venus aspect, the attraction. Let me talk a little bit about Venus. Venus is a very, very interesting planet because Venus has a very thick atmosphere. Because of that, Venus basically holds on to any energy that escapes through the atmosphere. It has constant greenhouse effect going. Venus energy is very attractive. What I mean by attractive is that it attracts. It magnetizes. It pulls towards itself. It pulls things towards itself. Whatever you value, that’s what you’re going to be attracting with Venus energy. It’s very, very good for quick money spells. Venus is really good for that kind of stuff.
Justin: Venus and Taurus.
Brandon: That is how Venus works. The other cool thing about Venus is that it rotates the opposite way of almost all the other planets. It rotates clockwise. If you are on Venus, which you would fry to death if you were on Venus, but say you could be on Venus, the sun would rise in the west.
Justin: Yes, you could have some sunscreen or something.
Brandon: [laughs] Some sunscreen. Just a little bit.
The sun would rise in the west and set in the east. What that says is that Venus is also about completion. It helps you to complete projects. If you have trouble completing projects, you can increase that Venus energy and it will help you to really effortlessly complete projects.
Venus doesn’t like work. Venus is not about work.
Brandon: No, I’m serious.
A third interesting fact about Venus is that a day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus. A day on Venus is 243 Earth days. A year on Venus is 225 Earth days.
Christine: What? That doesn’t make sense.
Brandon: A day is longer than a year. It rotates very, very slowly. The amount of time it takes to make a full rotation is longer than the amount of time it takes to make the full revolution around the Sun.
Justin: Yes, okay.
Brandon: It’s very leisurely, very effortlessly. Law of attraction people talk about effortlessness. They talk about just taking it easy. Very Venus. I can see Venus or Aphrodite really getting into this law of attraction. Just take it easy. Just do whatever feels good to you. That’s all Venus.
Justin: So the sun rises in the west on Venus and sets in the east. Interesting. It rotates opposite of the other planets. I did not know that.
Brandon: Only Venus and Uranus do that. We’ll do Uranus next time.
Venus is all about completion. It likes to take things easy. It says, “Why should I rush?” That’s awesome. It attracts. It attracts. That’s very good energy. It can be very good energy, but as I’ve discussed, that’s really only good for current-level goals. Venus can get what she wants to get if she believes she can get it now. If she doesn’t believe she can get it, forget it.
Justin: Forget it.
Brandon: Forget it. Can’t do it. You need other energy. If she believes she can get it, she’s right there. That’s awesome. She’s right there. She needs to believe it in order to actually make it happen. She needs to already believe it before even trying. That’s the attractive quality of Venus which is very important to magic. Very important, yes, but not the only quality.
The final aspect about Venus is again, it’s all about love, it’s the goddess of love, Venus and Aphrodite. Because of that, you need to really be in love with your desires and your goals in order to complete them, to hold them to completion. I’ve talked about the aspects and stages of the creation process before. Robert Fritz calls them germination, assimilation, and completion. I’ve called them creation, debugging, and completion. That is what I called them in The Art of Reality Creation.
In the creation process, Venus isn’t so great. In the debugging and completion, Venus is great. You need that Venus energy. You need to really be in love with your goals and your desires. That’s why they really need to have the emotional aspect.
Venus really pairs well with the Moon, too, because you need to have that emotional aspect. You need to really love your goals for it to happen. That is where Venus comes in. It helps you to finish the process. It helps you to end everything and complete the process of creation. It’s not so great at the initiation stage.
An excess in Venus energy is going to be way too passive. It’s going to be like just sitting and waiting for it to happen, just letting it come. It’s not going to. I’m sorry, it’s not going to if you’re just overly passive. Overly passive. It’s not going to happen.
A deficiency, though, in Venus energy is going to be thinking you have to put in all the work, all the action. You can’t be passive at all. You can’t take it easy. You have to work yourself to death and really break your way through to your goals and take the action journey and all that kind of stuff. That’s another common downfall that people have. That would be a deficiency in Venus energy. You need to increase that and let that happen.
Again, both of those are very common issues, but I really want to focus on the excess because a lot of law of attraction people really have an excess of Venus energy. They just let go and feel good and let it happen. It doesn’t work so well. You really want to make sure you don’t have an excess in Venus energy.
If you have a deficiency, it’s going to feel like way too much work, not really fun anymore. That’s not going to be enjoyable. You’ll know if you have a deficiency, but if you have an excess, you really have to be aware of that and know how to take care of that.
Obviously, if you’re on one of those ends, you want to move more towards the other. If you have too much work involved, you want to work on being more passive. If you’re way too passive, you want to play a little more of the Martian energy we’ll talk about in a second and move towards the other end.
Brandon: Finally, we have Mars. Mars is very, very, very important.
Christine: It’s not where Mars bars come from, guys.
Brandon: No. Mars gets a little bit of a bad rap because people think Mars is about war and violence and breaking your way through things and anger and frustration. That’s poorly expressed Mars energy. That’s very…possible. It is involved in Mars.
Justin: It’s definitely in there.
Brandon: It’s definitely there.
Justin: It doesn’t have to be.
Brandon: It’s poorly expressed Mars energy.
Christine: The planet is red, in case you didn’t know that.
Brandon: Yes, I know it’s red.
Justin: My Mars is in Aries.
Brandon: You have a lot of Aries, Justin. You have a lot of Aries.
Justin: Yes, I know. Isn’t it something?
Brandon: Yes, wow. You have a lot of Aries. [laughs] Mine is also in Aries, actually. That’s interesting.
Christine: That’s why you’re so stubborn.
Brandon: I am very stubborn. That’s true. I am extremely stubborn.
Justin: That’s that Virgo Capricorn thing.
Brandon: Mars, I believe, is in my seventh house, so I’m even stubborn in relationships. How about that? [laughs]
Christine: Don’t I know it!
Brandon: Mars is really all about will.
Christine: There’s the will.
Brandon: Will is the key word here in Mars. Mars is about will. I want to read a quote I found in this series of articles called “Planetary Magic.”
Justin: I’ve got a book that’s got planetary magic in there.
Brandon: Really? The quote here is: “Venus wants to attract and let things happen. Mars wants to go out and make things happen.” That’s the difference. That is really all you need to know about Mars, but I will go on.
Mars wants to go out and make it all happen. It wants to get it right now, put in the effort, put in the will, do the actions necessary, and really just make it happen. That’s Mars for you. It’s highly initiative.
Justin: He’s a hardworking man.
Brandon: Exactly, right. He wants to go out there and get what he wants to get.
Justin: That’s right.
Brandon: It’s very similar to Venus in that way, where Venus wants to get what she wants to get, too, but Mars is like, “I’m going to get it by working hard.” Mars knows what he wants, and he’s going to go get it. He doesn’t care what he has to do to get it, is basically how you can describe Mars.
That energy, again, is sort of discouraged by a lot of both spiritual people and law of attraction people. In the spiritual community, you have: “You don’t want to be too willful. You don’t want to be too choosy about where you want to go and what you want.” Too much energy and too much effort are discouraged. In the law of attraction community, it’s about, again, the Venus energy. “You want to be very passive. You want to let go. You just want to let it come to you. You don’t want to try to make it happen.” That kind of stuff.
Mars is not about that. Mars is going to say, “Hey, I want it. I want it now. I’m going to make it happen.” That’s Mars for you.
Justin: That’s Mars.
Brandon: He’s going to do it. He’s going to do it, absolutely. It’s all about beginnings. It’s about initiation. It’s about starting new projects. That’s the germination or creation stage. You need to really apply that will. Apply that Mars energy to making it happen. That’s so important when you’re working with new projects, new goals, new manifestations, whatever it is that you’re trying to create with the law of attraction or magic or whatever it is. Or just plain old goals. You need that will. You need that energy in front in order to create and in order to move things along and move the energy.
Just like I said about creation versus attraction, this is creation. You need to move things. Move mountains, so to speak. The will is what it is that does that. The will chooses. It says, “This is what I’m doing, and I’m going to do it.” That is how Mars works.
It’s basically the will that is the most important thing that controls magic. Magic is all about will. Will is probably the number one key in using magic. You have to will. You can’t just be passive and saying “whatever the highest good is.” I think we talked about this a little bit. Justin, you mentioned in the support call how you’re not a big fan of that.
Justin: No, not at all.
Brandon: The highest good stuff. Mars is not about that, either.
Justin: Not at all. That is…no….
Brandon: Mars says, “This is what I want to do. I’m going to do it, and that’s it.”
There’s also very little emotion. Again, we talk about how you need emotion in the law of attraction. That’s true. That’s true, but it comes later. The first step really has nothing to do with emotion. Mars is so hot on the planet, astronomically speaking, if there is water, it’s either melted or it’s in a region where it’s really cold, like the poles or something. There’s just no room. It’s so hot because the day is longer, the sun really heats things up.
Mars is just about action and will. There’s little emotion there. You’re just going to choose. It doesn’t really matter. There might be emotion behind why you want it, but you don’t need that a lot up front. You’re just going to choose it and that’s it.
Justin: With raw power.
Brandon: With raw power, exactly. Mars is all about raw power.
Justin: What emotion you have is channeled into your will in a force. Then you just let ‘er rip.
Brandon: Again, once you start the project or manifestation, then as it carries along, that raw power can’t hold things forever. It can’t move forever. It’s going to fall away a little bit. Then you have Venus that comes in and says, “Okay, now I’m just going to let it come.” That’s the more debugging/completion stage.
Justin: For everybody that’s wondering, your emotion keeps the raw power going. When your will starts to flag, because at some point it will…
Brandon: That’s where Venus comes in.
Justin: That’s when you take the emotion and you fuel it. Your will reasserts itself and pushes through. Without that emotion, Mars breaks. It doesn’t bend. It’s either you or it. The emotion makes sure you can bend and that you have another source of energy to increase your will.
Brandon: That’s where Venus comes in. Venus is all about the emotions and feeling pleasurable and that kind of stuff. For the law of attraction people, yes, feel good about things, but first get that fire moving. Get that fire going where you choose what you want and you’re fiery and willful about it. You have that raw power. You feel it within yourself.
Justin: Raw power.
Brandon: Raw power, that’s the key word. You have that raw power within yourself and it’s moving. This is the goal I want. This is what I’m going to choose. This is what I do choose right now, and it’s going to happen.
Justin: The spark is you choosing.
Brandon: Yes, that’s the spark.
Justin: For people who are asking, “I thought you said you have to have something to drive the will.” Your emotional spark will drive the will. That drives your will. That’s your Martian energy.
Brandon: I used the analogy of an airplane before. Once you take off….You need all that raw power to take off. You really need a lot of power and a lot of fuel. Once you level out and you’re on your way, then you need the more passive energy that says, “We’re just going to keep in the air and move forward at a steady pace, but we don’t have to really blast our way forward anymore.”
Brandon: It’s a softer sort of thing. That’s the more Venus energy. That’s where the emotions come in and where you start feeling good. That’s great, but you need that raw power to begin with. That’s important.
An excess in Mars is where really you’re getting angry, frustrated…
Christine: It’s probably me.
Brandon: You’re not channeling in a good way. You’re not channeling it in a good way. You see the obstacles and you just break through them. You violently break through the obstacle. You don’t want that. It’s also not allowing the more soft energy to come. You’re doing it all by willpower alone. Like Justin said, that’s going to fade away eventually. If you try to hold on to that, you’re just way too much in Mars energy.
A deficiency in Mars energy is what most people have, where you’re not really choosing what you want enough. You don’t have enough initiative. You’re not choosing where you want to go. You’re not using that will. A lot of people are so uncomfortable with this. “It’s whatever God wants to bring me. Whatever the Universe wants to bring me, the highest good.” No! That’s not magic. That’s—I don’t even know.
Justin: Something else. Somebody told you that somewhere.
Brandon: [laughs] That’s not what we’re meant for. That’s not what we’re meant to do. If you have a deficiency (which is much more common), you want to really charge up that raw power and say, “This is what I’m doing.” Again, it’s a spectrum between the Venus energy and the Mars energy. You want to be kind of in the middle—enough in the Mars energy, and then you have the Venus energy to complete things. Mars is initiation and starting things, and Venus is completing things, bringing them to completion.
It Takes a Balance
Brandon: Just to summarize all that, you have the five personal planets. The Sun is going to be your purpose for living, your personality, your reason for wanting what you want in life, and you need that. You need that ego, but you don’t want too much or too little of it.
The Moon is going to be your emotion. That’s going to be the thing that says, “This is why I want what I want, and it’s okay. I’m not going to focus too much on the positive or on the negative. I’m just going to let these emotions flow through and use them as a tool.”
That is the Mercury that says, “I am the Magician. I am the Magus. I can do what I want. I have these tools at my disposal. I will be detached and in the zero state or witnessing state. I can use the emotions. I can use everything else to create what I want. I can go where I want to go.”
The Venus energy says, “You know what? Things are pretty good. I’m just going to let things happen and let things come to me, and they definitely will.” Venus says, “I expect good things, and I’m going to get the good things.”
Mars says, “I want to create something totally new. I’m going to do it because I have will. I’m going to move in that direction.”
Those are the five planets. If you have any of those imbalanced, you have something wrong in your energy system in your life in your creative process, depending on what you’re using it for. Most people do. You want to focus on where you have those imbalances and work on balancing them out more. Do you have too much will or too much passivity? Do you have too much intellect or too much emotion? Do you have too much ego or not enough? That’s what you want to look at and try to balance things out.
It takes a balance of all of these plus the other five we’re going to talk about next time to really bring things to completion and really be able to create very quickly and very effortlessly.
Again, those are the five personal planets. Next time we’ll talk about the five collective planets. Those are also very important for creation and for other reasons.
I hope that was a good introduction, at least, for how you can get started with this.
